Paso Robles The town where Jesse James licked his wounds, where James Dean met his maker and where Ignacy Paderewski ditched his piano in favor of zinfandel. The largest stand-alone wine appellation in Calfornia, Paso Robles is often overlooked by tourists and wine critics, and for the most part, that’s the way that Roblans would like to keep it.

Suspended midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco with a culture bouncing between surferhipster, Bowzer and Bauhaus, wine-wise and wild, wild West , Paso Robles is neither Napa nor Sonoma; it is more a place than a state of mind.

Intoxicology Report’s Chris Kassel spent harvest month, 2013 in Paso Robles, sleeping in the vineyards, schlepping in the cellars and slumming with the loco locals—loving every minute of it.
This is his fractured Paso story—with all the grit, the grapes, the guts and the glitter left intact.

A Rite of Paso eBook Chris Kassel

A disappointing book to me. I was hoping for a larger perspective of Paso and its wine culture and unfortunately this book is really a profile of a few "characters" none of which were all that compelling to me. Probably a better review if I had gone into it knowing more about the book. That said, the writing style is a bit crude for my taste.

A Rite of Paso eBook Chris Kassel Reviews

I have long felt that Chris Kassel's intoxreport.com and rhapsodyinrust.com websites deserve more traffic; his frequent irreverent reviews on the former and vivid imagination running rampant on the latter have entertained me for years. So I was delighted when I received a copy of A Rite of Paso.

Oenophiles will definitely learn about Paso Robles presented in Kassel's signature conversational prose and newbies will learn a lot about how wine is made. Everyone will certainly be amused with Chris's contextual digressions and diversions that include how Vaseline was "discovered," the brothers James and the architectural monstrosity known as Hearst Castle.

Chris has always called a spade a spade--shy and retiring he isn't--and his candid assessment of the citizenry and personalities he ran across October 2013 reads like you're sitting in a bar with him and he's recounting his vacation warts and all. This definitely should be on your must-read list.

Full disclosure as a public relations professional, I have known Chris for over 10 years though we have never met in person. He sent a copy to me as a gift with the inscription "Thanks for your often misguided support." Regardless, I would have written this same review even if I had picked it up in a bargain bin for $5.99. (Chris will get the joke.)
I was introduced to this book by a chapter excerpt included in the recent shipment from Epoch Estate Wines (a chapter discussing them). The writing had a unique perspective. I ordered the full book the same day.

The title of this work gives you a not-so-subtle hint that you're not going to be reading a collection of wine tastings. This is an irreverent collection of verbal snapshots. The focus is Paso Robles, but definitely wide-angle and big depth of field. Sure, you'll read about some of the big names of the AVA. But along the way, you'll also visit Jesse James, William Randolf Hearst, James Dean and other luminaries. You'll hear about walnut and vodka production. You'll meet people that are close to caricatures. Success stories and failures. Plus lots of details on wine soil, harvesting and production.

It's a short book; I read it in one day. Over way too soon. Definitely recommended.

One warning the edition has way too many digital conversion typos.
Personally knowing some of the characters in the book made it ever so much fun to read ! loved it,. love the Paso wines!
A hilarious and perceptive look at the newest superstar wine region, its culture and characters. (Disclaimer I'm apparently one of them.) Humor IQ required!
Tells a great story of some of the characters in and around Paso. Just reading it brings back fond memories of my interaction with most of those mentioned. If only I could live there.
The first few chapters were hard to follow but when the book finally gets to winemakers it is a fun and interesting read.
I discovered things about Paso Robles I did not know, and I had already visited there several times. Great stories that bring life to the region's many characters told with a refreshing sense of humor. Beware, if you fear tarantulas!
A disappointing book to me. I was hoping for a larger perspective of Paso and its wine culture and unfortunately this book is really a profile of a few "characters" none of which were all that compelling to me.
